Barry & Harry (22) Gaston shoots over the cross-bar

Barrie en Harrie

'No, Harry, I will not do it. I refuse. No way. Not.'
'Come on, Barry, it's not that bad. Your cousins have to adept to all kinds of things, so it wouldn't hurt if you made a gesture.'
'I will not shoot the ball over the cross-bar on purpose. I just can't do it. My body refuses. It hurts. It ought to be illegal. It's obscene.'
Harry sighs and gives up.
Having a discussion with Barry is even more difficult than stopping safely in a part score.

Perhaps Barry's intractability had something to do with that deal from the team match of the night before. Gaston hadn't succeeded in making 4. This to Barry's horror; he didn't have any sympathy for his cousin's mistake.
This was the deal:

EW had started by cashing three heart tricks after which West had exited with a trump, rather than the obvious looking club.
Gaston had to get rid of the two club losers in his hand. Clearly the diamond suit offered prospects. Gaston started counting. 'Ve 'ave got seven diamonds, so they 'ave got six. If ze suit is 3-3 with them, all their diamonds vill come down under ze AKQ.'
Gaston saw an extra chance. He drew the opponents' trumps, but kept on playing the suit after that. On the fifth trump East was in trouble. He was left with J1098 and K9. After some thought, he released a club. Thereafter Gaston was unable to make his contract, since the diamond suit turned out to be 4-2.
Understandingly Harry had listened to Gaston en Philémon's report on the deal. To judge from his mumbling, Barry was less compassionate.
'Ve'll discuss ze deal with Granddad tomorrow', Gaston finished his story.

For some time already Barry and Harry have been passing the ball at each other, when Gaston and Philémon come running up on the pitch.
'Ve 'ave talked over with Granddad zat 4 from yesterday', Gaston pants. 'I did not play vell. I 'oped for someone to make a faulty discard on all ze spades, but I should 'ave looked better. I should 'ave cashed ze K and ze Q, followed by ze Q and a diamond to ze K. Next I could 'ave ruffed a diamond with an 'igh trump and crossed to dummy with ze A. Ze last two diamonds 'ave now been set up. Stupid of me, not 'aving seen zis. I thought I 'ad to draw ze trumps first, before touching ze diamonds. But Granddad said that iet was not an easy contract.'
'Not an easy contract? Now listen…', Barry begins.
'Iet reminded Granddad of a deal you, Barry, played a few years ago. Granddad 'ad to laugh again, 'e said, thinking of ze trouble 'e had had, convincing you that drawing ze trumps can sometimes wait a little wh…’
'Say Gaston', Barry interrupts his cousin, 'how should it be done, this kicking thing in that rugby game of yours? Can you show me? I'm really interested, you know.'
