Dear Ed & Peter,

How do you calculate the results of team matches?

Thank you in advance.
O. de Vries

Answer Ed Hoogenkamp (South)

Dear O. de Vries,

Central in the scoring of team matches are IMP's (International Match Points).
But first we calculate the difference in score points per deal. An example:
- At table 1 NS (team A) bid and make a vulnerable 3NT contract: +600 to team A.
- At table 2 EW (team A) defeat the 3NT contract of team B's NS-pair by one trick: +100 to team A.
- So on this deal team A scores +700 points and team B −700.
This number (700) is converted to IMP's, using this table:

Point
Difference
IMP Point
Difference
IMP Point
Difference
IMP
20 -  40 1 370 -  420 9 1500 - 1740 17
50 -  80 2 430 -  490 10 1750 - 1990 18
 90 - 120 3 500 -  590 11 2000 - 2240 19
130 - 160 4 600 -  740 12 2250 - 2490 20
170 - 210 5 750 -  890 13 2500 - 2990 21
220 - 260 6  900 - 1090 14 3000 - 3490 22
270 - 310 7 1100 - 1290 15 3500 - 3990 23
320 - 360 8 1300 - 1490 16 4000 - ....... 24

So team A scores +12 IMP on this deal, team B −12 IMP.
Note that a 10 score point difference is neglected, so 3NT+1 scores no better than 4/ just made (contrary to MP-play!).
Note too that the bigger the score point difference, the wider the range of the corresponding IMP score. For instance: 20 − 40 = 1 IMP (range = 20), while 1500 − 1740 = 17 IMP (range = 240).

Suppose that after all deals have been played team A turns out to have won 54 IMP's and lost 37 IMP's. Team A has therefore won by 54-37 IMP's (and team B lost by 37-54 IMP's). The difference is 17 IMP's.
After the match this 'IMP deficit' is converted to VP (Victory Points), using this table:

The first column (red) shows the result in Victory Points, which is dependant on the number of deals played.
The (blue) field at the top of all following columns shows the number of deals the match consisted of.
Proceed as follows: move down in the correct column (number of deals) until you find the IMP deficit in question (17); move to the left column and you find the corresponding result in VP's.
In our example (IMP deficit 17):
- In a short match of 8 deals the result is 20-10.
- In a long match of 36 deals the result is 17-13.

In Norway they use Loser Points, I think...

Answer Peter van der Linden (North)

Dear O. de Vries,

In his final paragraph Ed mentions Loser Points (Defeat Points, DP, would be a more logical name) but of course these (if they existed) are Victory Points as well: 20-10 in VP is 10-20 in 'DP'.
But you know, that constitutes alto matematico, as higher mathematics is undoubtedly called in Spanish.
I have nothing to add, since I have added my comments to Ed's reply. As a result I hope it is understandable for non-Spanish as well...

En hils, greetings from Orkanger
