The double stands?

Dear Martin,

The bidder bids 1. This is doubled by the opponent. The bidder's partner then bids 2. Everyone passes. Does the double still hold or is it erased when the 2 bid is made?

Thanks,
JoAnn

Dear JoAnn,

After a bid is made, an opponent may double that bid. That double may then also be redoubled by an opponent of the doubler. But when a new bid is made, a double or redouble of the previous bid, if any, is cancelled. So in your case, the final contract is 2 undoubled.
