| Adventures of a professional bridge player 2: Australia, the final |
|
The tension is mounting. This is a tournament in which most of the world's leading players participate and I am playing in the final. Although I have overcome my jet lag, I cannot sleep. Is it nervous stress?
West cashes four club tricks. As he has passed as a dealer and has shown up with ten points, I successfully finesse both ♥V and ♦V over east. In the end we beat Sweden rather easily. Not in the least because of this nice little gadget.
East has nine tricks in hand and wants his side to play 3NT if his partner has a heart guard. A jump overcall in the opponent's suit asks specifically for a stopper in that suit and shows a long, solid minor suit.
My sister calls: 'Sjoert, you're doing very well I see, can you spend some of the prize money on TimTams?' TimTams? They turn out to be the local cookie, very tasty with coffee, an absolute must for each European. My girlfriend calls: 'Sjoert, please use some of the prize money on Uggs.' Uggs? A sort of boots, it appears, a must have for any woman (and even any baby). A friend calls: 'Sjoert, please don't forget to buy me a carton of cigarettes on returning? After all it looks like you can afford it, hahahaha.' |
