Bidding systems are based upon high card points (HCP). We use HCP to evaluate the strength of our hands. However, more is needed to make a useful evaluation of a hand. This category helps you practice hand evaluation beyond counting HCP. | West | North | East | South |

| 1♥ | 1NT | pass | ?? |
| W/All | | | | South 1 | South 2 | South 3 | | ♠ | 6 4 | ♠ | A 4 | ♠ | Q 3 2 | | ♥ | 10 9 7 | ♥ | 7 | ♥ | J 5 3 | | ♦ | 8 4 | ♦ | K 10 8 7 6 | ♦ | 6 5 4 3 | | ♣ | A K 10 9 8 7 | ♣ | J 10 9 8 6 | ♣ | K Q 4 |
What should South 1, 2 and 3 bid? |

Why does he do that?** (3) |

In 'Why does he do that?' we focus on the bidding and/or play of an experienced, good player. At some moment we ask why he did what he did. | N/All | | | ♠ | 7 6 4
| | | ♥ | A 3
| | | ♦ | A 8 7 6 4
| | | ♣ | K J 7
| |
| West | North | East | South |
|---|
| — | 3♣ | pass | 3NT! | | pass | pass | pass | |
South's 3NT bid looks rather odd, since he doesn't have a spade guard and only 12 HCP. After all, North's pre-emptive opening suggests fewer than 10 HCP, so NS and EW probably have about the same point strength, perhaps even EW have more points! Why did South do that? |

West leads the ♠Q. Declarer takes his time to plan his play and then orders dummy to play the ♠2. From his hand he follows suit with the ♠5. West continues with the ♠J, dummy's ♠K winning the trick. Next declarer plays the ♦6 from dummy. East immediately goes up with the ♦A. Doesn't he know the rule 'second hand low'? In other words: shouldn't East try to catch an honour card from NS with his ace, so it costs the opponent to force out that ace? So why did East hop up with the ♦A? |
